SUTTON, PADDY
‘I have a deep romantic attachment to the sea. I learnt to sail when I was 7. Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues under the Sea is one of the stories I remember best from childhood. Cousteau was a hero. The sea is uncluttered by all the stuff of modern life. It's not afraid of a clichéd sunset.
I am just as fascinated by history. As a boy I watched black & white war movies, read books about the crusades and Greek mythology. War was thrilling, I devoured battle stories and Commando Picture Library comics in equal measure. Later I almost became a soldier.'
Paddy Sutton's work is nearly always linked to the sea. In 2006 he travelled from Denmark to Iceland on a container ship photographing seascapes in areas where ships were sunk in the Battle of the Atlantic in WWII. The images now form the Atlantic series. In 2007 Paddy spent time with the Royal Navy working on a project called ‘Fathom' off the North coast of Scotland. More recently Paddy has been evolving an ongoing series called ‘Port' in and around the reed-beds on the Suffolk coast.
Paddy's work has also been published in the US.
Paddy Sutton lives on the Suffolk coast with his family, several chickens and a couple of pigs.
