Artists / Becky Buchanan

Polka Dot Dress, 2010
resin and mixed media on canvas, 50 x 50 cm, SOLD

Based on the edge of the Blackdown Hills in Somerset, Buchanan’s large scale abstract paintings are inspired by a fascination with contrasts between the organic and the artificial. In her work she explores this in the juxtaposition of visual languages: large gestural sweeps of paint are set against a slow bleed of poured colour; drips and splatters of paint are contrasted with rigid geometric shapes.

Buchanan draws on a strong heritage of abstract painters, and states that artists such as Patrick Heron, Albert Irvin, and John Hoyland serve as inspiration just as much as the abstract work Pia Fries and Fiona Rae.

Aware that chance accidents in painting are integral to the nature of her work the artist employs the medium of resin paint, which is difficult to manipulate and predict. In this way she is able to generate a more intuitive response to the progress of her work.
